Morning all. No joy locating Hubb’s missing truck fob. And he got a partial rant. Bad me. It was so firmly drummed into my head as a child to put crucial things in secure places consistently that not doing so is just incomprehensible. Meh. Any opinions about spays? I have had rotties spayed before first heat and I’m leaning toward that with Vala. One neighbor has two uncut male dogs and one of them is an experienced fighter. They are both free range which is fine, I never see them but if she tips over I’ll bet I do. Plus will my boys (all fixed) fight each other in spite of that? I’ll bet there’s a book or article they haven’t read ;) We’ll have a good day all. I’m off to retrace Hubb’s steps :he

I tell my puppy people, unless you have a very good reason wait until at least a year old to spay/neuter or better yet 18-24 months. Reasoning --- growth plates do not close until they are over a year old - closer to 18-24 months. My dogs (Belgians) will grow 1/4-1/2 from 1 year to 2 years.
Dogs spayed/neutered younger than one year grow taller than they would have. I don't know the true science (and I seriously now hate that word) behind hormones and growth - but there is a connection. When there was a huge push for early spay/neuter 2-10 months there were massive numbers of shelter puppies that grew tall. For those with light-boned ancestry (sight hounds) that also include increased bone breaks (typically legs). I still see it today in rescues. For a breed such as a Malinois that's about 2 inches taller (one of my students has a rescue Mal she got as a pup and the rescue neutered at 10 weeks). Just info and food for thought.

I understand the unwanted litter angle as well. For what it's worth I have had intact dogs and bitches living in the same house since I was a kid. Not one unplanned or "oops" litter.
