California’s wealthiest residents could face a one-time 5% tax on their net worth under a new proposal aimed at replacing billions of dollars in federal funding cuts to healthcare.

The measure – called the "2026 Billionaire Tax Act" – seeks to counter $30 billion in potential federal funding cuts to California's Medicaid program, with a portion of the revenue earmarked for public education, according to supporters, which include the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Supporters of the measure argue that around 200 billionaires in California hold about $2 trillion in wealth, but the state's other 19 million taxpayers pay a "much larger portion" of their true income.

"If we do not do this, millions of people are going to lose health care, an untold number of people will go without treatment and there will be tragedy after tragedy," Dave Regan, president of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, said in a statement, according to Newsweek.

The measure would need to garner more than 870,000 signatures by next spring in order to be placed on the November 2026 ballot, Realtor.com reported.

If enacted, California's wealthiest residents, including tech executives like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, could face massive bills.

The proposal also comes as the state continues to grapple with population outflows to lower-tax states such as Florida.

Between 2023 and 2024, more Americans left California than any other state, Newsweek reported, citing Census Bureau data.

A comment to this Fox article: Three things: 1) it is a one-time tax, which will lead to an annual tax. 2) the money will not be used for the stated intentions and will be diverted into the hands of special interests, likely outside of the state. 3) a lot of billionaires will leave California and live more happily ever after while asking themselves why they did not do it sooner.

Let see. Who do we know that lives in CA?

Sage does but because she has sheep, she's probably not a billionaire.
Ridgetop used to, but thankfully she fled.:weee
RR Homestead does, but she's leaving shortly!:frow
I used to but I fled in 2017.:celebrate
I want to flee WA. We don't have a state income tax, but they want one. So, since they can't have that they keep raising taxes and adding new taxes. Soon, we won't be able to afford to live here.

FYI for Californians: it's being reported today that the CA legislature is proposing a tax on your savings, possibly on retirement accounts.

Flee!
We're trying! We're trying! Picked up more packing material today. Feeling overwhelmed on what to actually start packing. Just need to start on the first box and that should get me going. I'm a bit marker of what is in a box and where it goes/came from. I love the idea from @SageHill and will be doing a note to keep track. Genius! Hadn't thought about that and would greatly help. Especially when we question where something is and if it's here or there.

I guess it really still hasn't sunk in as many rich folks have already left that they can't tax the rich if they leave. Although I keep hearing about an exit tax so I guess they are just going to keep trying to get every dime they can from us. Moving can't come soon enough. That's for sure.

Evening everyone! Went and got the semen tank filled today for what I'm thinking is the final time here. Really sad as I like the young man who fills our tank. Didn't tell him we are leaving but hope we aren't still here in 3 months when we need it filled again.
Have to milk for the calves milk tonight then I hope to start tackling the first boxes of packing. No one ask if I succeeded tomorrow ok? 😂 Failure is an option until I get past whatever this mental hold up is I got going on.

I want them.
Those would be perfect... just vacuum them once in awhile, no feed bill, no poop to clean up... it looks like a win win...lol
