Overcast, breezy, looks-like-rain weather...no rain.

After my chiropractic appointment I went by the local nursery, splurged on transplant packs of violas, pansies, lettuce, Swiss chard, collards, and arugula. I've never tried lettuce or chard transplants, but figured that as dry as it's been they might do better than seeds. Arugula is new to me. If I don't like it I'll give it to the chickens.

As I transplanted I amended the beds with soil from the chicken run, and lots of water. The soil is like dust.

Planting Swiss chard

Done!

I transplanted four leaf lettuce around the collards and Chinese cabbage.

I had two extra lettuce plants, so I tucked them in the turnips/peas bed.

I used the trimmer, then the mower on part of the backyard. It looks better.

⬆️ The bushes on the far left and far right are my elderberries. In the middle there's a watermelon vine still hanging on, blossoming, and a few sweet potato vines that have possibly developed some additional tubers in the melon area. The soil is dry, and very hard, so I'm going to have to wait until after it rains to try digging. Or maybe I'll just water it with the hose...

Big boyz!

I love that you're still planting in your garden. We'll be cleaning ours out soon.

Handsome boys! What breed?
Bantam Speckled Sussex :love

This is their sire, Zaccheus:

Poor guy lost his tail feathers during a molt, they're still growing in.

We're in USDA Zone 8a here, rarely get frost before November. I've covered my leaf crops with plastic in the past, and they did well. Collards laugh at freezing temperatures, shake off snow and ice (if we get any!), and can be harvested throughout the winter. The chickens love them, too.

We're zone 6/7. So too hot for some plants and too cold for others...lol We do have a good growing season.

We have one Speckled Sussex. We had two, but one died as a chick. Beautiful birds.💗

Gardens Update

Saturday
I took down the plastic netting fence from around the blueberry patch.

Then I trimmed and mowed all the weeds on the edges. I placed fence sections to mark the blueberry area.

Much better!

Sunday after church I bought four bales of pine straw (needles). I mulched the blueberry bushes, then the elderberrys, with enough remaining to mulch the yarrow and some irises.

Yarrow on left.

While moving some old pine straw I disturbed a small black snake, a little larger than a pencil. I left it alone, probably a juvenile black racer.

Obedient plant is blooming!

I also transplanted some pansies and violas. I was going to use my blue-handled trowel, but it was being used...

Black swallowtail caterpillar is "J-ing", preparing to transform.
