This is my other roo, Zaccheus, with his chicks. Notice the coloring, more of a mahogany on his back. He's not show quality, but has some good points.

While my Speckled Sussex are not show quality, I decided early on to not breed the ones with obvious faults, like yellow shanks, or orange feathers, and I brought in eggs from another person with the breed, to add new DNA.

The lady who took two cockerels last week will have the best of my best.

Saturday

I went early to the farmers' market, picked up a few items, then stopped at the animal shelter next door to drop off my volunteer dog walker forms. They were about to have orientation, so I said to myself "Why not?"

I walked Hannah, a recent addition, and an abused dog. I let her sniff all around the edge of wooded areas in the back, and gave her some loving. She seemed a little withdrawn, hope it helped her. It gave me a dose of dog, and I will definitely do it again.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...the chicks...

They're getting SO BIG!

After it gets dark I'm going to check leg bands, replace as needed.

Today's afternoon project was to install the drop rods on my fence gates. I'd purchased a couple sets online about a month ago. No instructions (of course) so it took longer as I rearranged the hardware several times until I had what I wanted.

And from the backyard:

One gate has the rod sunk deep in the ground, so it shouldn't move, but the other needs a piece of pipe in the ground, pvc perhaps, to drop the rod into, and some sort of hook to secure the rod in the up position. Right now it's being held by a zip-tie. It'll get done. I feel better at least having one side secured. Now I won't worry about the propane delivery hose damaging the gate.

And I cleaned up the broken pots and junk that was underneath the compost barrel. I feel so much better, getting it done.

About 15 years ago a coworker gave me morning glory seedlings, which I planted. They were white with blue stripes. They self-seeded, but I also planted some scarlet morning glories, which also self-seeded.

But every year they create new color variations. Here are some of them this year:

This is a lighter variation of the original blue striped variety.

Look:

One year I saw a red morning glory blossom with purple stripes, so pretty!
