So, I asked the internet, as most do and this is the first reply so far.
"cost of fiber, plus 5 cents per yard per ply is a common pricing method"
1,000ft is 333.33 yards. Right?
So, 333.33×0.05= 16.66
16.66×3 plys= 49.99
49.99+fleece cost of about $40= 89.99
Round that sucker up, total for 1k feet is $90.
Gawd, yeah, I could never buy yarn at those prices. But it is a crap ton of work to get it there.
I could remove fleece cost, since it's Billy's & I'd always mark up his fleece's worth vs the other Babydolls.
I wonder if I should sell the white yarn. I'll never get it like that again. Those sheep were grossly overfed & overweight, causing the longer staple length & luck caused the softness of it, as they sure weren't as soft the next go around. I could see that yarn at full price because of that and because it's more consistent & the softness of it.
Guess I need to make something from it that I'll wear regularly or suck it up & sell it...
That is tough, probably gets a family discount. I found this place with Google, might give you a general price
https://fairwindsalpacas.com/alpaca-yarn.php
That's 1/3rd the cost of hand processed & spun, it looks like?
I wonder how much mill spun costs again...Might be best to send my favorite fleeces to the mill to be spun into yarn, then just add a little $ for caring for the sheep year round. Hmm.
Central va mill costs used here-
If 4# into roving is $50, then there is the $2 per pound of 250yd finished yarn fee and the $20-24 based on thickness...$72-74 or so?
Makes like, two 250yd skeins at $36-37 each, if zero is waste.
Yeah, that alpaca website must be charging less because its cleaner from the start and it's their mill & their animals. But I always heard alpaca being expensive, so that's odd that their yarn is cheaper.
And mills need at least 3" length to spin, which most Babydoll is not...ugh...
