Because Boone has had so many bad experiences with the truck I would work with him and the new crate in the house or someplace other than the truck for awhile. Get him to love that new crate (should be easy since he is already crate trained). Even so, make this crate a strong foundation of comfort for him before it gets into the truck. Let Randy paint the board - it'll be dry and ready to use before Boone makes this new crate is best friend/comfortable place he loves.
The human condition is - you're crate trained voila this is a crate and it's your new crate. Dog condition - you're putting me in a box in the scary truck.

I will have Randy bring it in tonight. Thanks @SageHill

Plus, once house happy, in truck without going anywhere.....just for familiarity. Maybe a slooow drive just a few miles. So he associates kennel & ride safe. Always time for longer. 🙏👍🥰

Two dogs in town is a problem but, if Gizmo is there & calm, any chance he would feel even more settled in the crate or no?? @SageHill thoughts?

This is far worse than teaching a horse to cross ditches 😳😁

Where is Cesar Millan when ya need him? 😵‍💫

Yup and Yup! Defintely would do in the truck without moving. Get him in - maybe in then out and back in making every in and every out a good thing - turn it into a game. Once you've got that game in, close the door and sip your coffee standing or sitting next to him in the crate. Also in and read a little. All of that done over a lot of days.
I do like the two dog idea - though if Boone were to revert that could also effect Gizmo esp since Boone is her buddy and has "seniority". Add in doing the two would take two good handlers and I get the feeling that Randy might not be up to that and things could backfire.
The first drive could just be 20-50 ft. Stop and play the in and out game and quit for the day.

Yeah the 2 dog thing won’t work, esp since Gizmo is a Tasmanian devil. She’s anything but calming.
Boone seems to really like this crate. He seldom goes in his wire crate except when I ask him to (although the other 2 love his crate for some reason) but he’s going inside this one of his own volition. He’s napping in there now with the door open ❤️
