One of my granddaughters ( of the son that won’t speak to us) learned I am going to Calif and asked me to go to her house (shes an adult) and teach her to make bread. :weee
While posting to her, an old friend in Tehachapi wants me to go up there and teach her also. 😂. Looks like we will get lots of travel time. I’m so excited to be around people who want me!

They had a gender reveal at the ranch yesterday. We had to stand for more than an hour and I had to leave Boone home because of the ranch dogs so Randy had to support me. The parents are the young girl who lives across from us and her husband, one of the ranch owners’ triplets. When any of the other kids have something going on, they throw a huge party with a hired band and tri tips and the whole hog. They treat this kid like a red headed step child and did absolutely nothing. He and his wife bought rolls and some cold cuts and little bags of chips for the handful of their friends that showed up.

In typical ranch style, they used tannerite, set something in top to blow up. drive back up the road with all of us and used a rifle to set off the explosion of pink smoke. So at least I will be able to make little dresses and hopefully make up for some of the neglect from their family. Her dad wants to set something up for me to deliver him sourdough when we go to town. (He lives 2 hr away) and to have them deliver when they do. 😂 Yesterday he bought sourdough and eggs from us. I don’t know what these kids are going to do. The house they live in is REALLY small It used to be boss’ office. There is literally no room for a crib. 🫤

Anyway, all the standing time took a toll and my back and hips are a mess. So instead of leaving at 6 am and driving 12 hr, I will leave around noon and stop halfway. It will be easier on both of us.

Got a late start. I was hurting this morning from all the standing around in the field yesterday. I had the shakes pretty bad too so had to depend on Randy to keep me up. I don’t even think Boone could have protected me yesterday.
We left around 9 am. Boone threw tantrums for awhile, tossing his bed and toys around the back seat and digging at it. I opened his windows a little bit and once we got on the pavement, he settled down. He hors about 2 hr before he whines but when I tell him we’re gonna stop at wherever, he quiets down and waits patiently. In Winnemucca he did sniffies all around the dog are while I dodged lawn mines, he was pretty much yanking me around, but no dogs were in site so I didn’t worry. Then I made him cross the parking lot so I could pee, get coffee and then top off the tank. We drove for 9 hours, only stopped twice, then I got Boone a puppy patti at Carl’s and we got a room for the night. It’s the cutest place I ever saw and the landscaping is amazing! We went to the store for water first, and he was good until we were leaving. An old man with a red off leash aussie were in front of the open door. I stopped to make sure the aussie didn’t approach. He was a gud boi and stood there until it was time to jump up on the man’s bicycle. Instead of waiting quietly with me, Boone roared and jumped forward. I pulled him back and checked him, but he was very focused on the dog. I turned us around like we were going back in the store and by thr tine we turned back, they were gone.
I need some way to find a situation where I can desensitize him to strange dogs.
Anyone got thoughts on it?

You will run across plenty of new dogs on this trip. Perhaps you could call ahead and arrangements could be made for a friend of whoever you are visiting could bring their dog for a controlled meeting. Then you’d have help to control the situation.

Redirection is the key for the other dogs. You almost had it in what you describe. You already are looking ahead and thinking - very important to see possible conflicts. Basically that's just situational awareness. When you see something way ahead it's time to redirect Boone - before he notices or starts to notice. Redirect with high value reward (I always have Puper-oni in my back pocket), a favorite toy, a task or trick he loves to do. Moving away like you did "going back into the store" was good - tack on one of the above and you should be home free. Do that and/or wait until the coast is clear or clear enough to continue on your way. Continuing on your way can also include food, heel sit reward, toy take give take give, etc. You've got this !!
And - for those dogs that are/will be "family" or "friends" on the trip - tag that with a new word that he knows it's ok to be a dog, go play, etc.

I slept like a log in the cottage. Cutest place ever! Woke early, felt good. Loaded up Boone and hit the road. He traveled great. 2 hr down we stopped at a rest area with a fenced dog potty. Just as we were about to enter, two men with small dogs showed up. I explained that Boone is a reactive adolescent and asked permission to let him watch from outside fence. (I’m not worried about losing control that way). The dogs approached and he whimpered and wiggled rather than escalate. We stopped in my old home town for a sandwich and he was ok but less than perfect.
At Chelsea’s her dogs were in garage but there was a slot where they can touch noses. Her dogs growled, Boone did not.
She rescued an elderly doxie that is not dog social. I made Boone lie down. He strained at the leash and army crawled toward her. She actually nose booped him and smelled his butt. He’s fine with her now.
Chelseas husband is home. We are going to have him help me hold Boone while meeting her dogs today. I hope all goes well. He needs to play with them but I will need to monitor him for heat stroke. Its going to be 100 on Saturday 😬
I am so enjoying Chelsea. All those years growing up where she hated me and refused to see us…making up for that. She’s a great Mama and a gifted, sensible woman. I am so glad I made it here. ❤️
